I came across an article that made me question how far we have fallen as a society. The article was obviously an opinion piece but surely. The article “Opinion: Beauty and the beast, Kenyan celebrities edition” clearly had the most of the audience questioning it, which I agree, it did leave a bad taste in my mouth. For one, I presume that the women featured were the beauty, while the men were the beast. I, however, could not help but notice that almost all the ‘beast’ were dark-skinned. This raises the question, does being dark-skinned mean you are not beautiful or handsome? Also what happened to the phrase tall dark and handsome?

Or is being of a lighter complexion automatically mean you are beautiful? The article only led me to conclude that colorism is alive and well. The writer did however acknowledge that in matters of the heart, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. However, diminishing people to their physical appearance is not fair. I am sure they have several redeeming features that attracted these beautiful women. The article nevertheless points to a larger societal issue of colorism.
